Fallout 76: Community Spotlight Article – Cyperian

Cosplay (the art of making costumes) has always been a crowd favorite for most communities.

They can be the highlight of conventions for a lot of fans but are often the result of months or even years of work from the creator. This month we managed to steal some time from Polish cosplayer “Cyperian” to discuss his creation process in our latest Community Spotlight!

Cosplay attracts all types of creators, but it seems there is one running theme that Cyperian hits on: “I have fun creating things from my favorite games and bringing them into real life. I’m a big PC player.” While it certainly helps to have a massive library of games to pull inspiration from, we asked Cyperian what drew him to Fallout? “I’ve played most of the Fallout games. I was attracted to the Fallout universe because of the classic music and retrofuturism style. Plus, it’s a lot of fun.” He is currently playing Fallout 76 and has made some amazing armor sets based off the ones seen in the Wasteland. “I’m not using any of the special builds in game, currently I’m using shotguns or heavy guns.”

Jumping into the world of cosplay can be a daunting task. “The most challenging costume I’ve worked on was my Arthur Maxson from Fallout 4. It was one of my first and I had a lot of fun making it, but I needed to know how to sew to make it look good.” Luckily for us, Cyperian didn’t let that deter him. When asked if he had any tips for people new to the world of cosplay, he advised: “To start, just think of what you want to do and go for it. If you are unsure how to do something, don’t worry, you will learn as you go through the process.” Decision paralysis can sometimes be the hardest first step. Sometimes you just need to take the leap and figure it out as go.

Picking the right materials for a costume can be its own beast entirely. If you’re working on a really complex armor set, the individual pieces can really start to add up and the weight of the entire costume can hinder your movement. We asked for his go-to material picks and Cyperian mentioned that he’s “using almost all materials. Leather to faux leather, cloth, EVA foam, and even 3D printing. My favorite so far has been getting to use 3D printing.” Of course, even if you’re making all of your own pieces by hand, ordering the right materials can certainly take a while. “It usually takes a few months. During which I work several hours a day to finish the project.” Many cosplayers also work with the intention of finishing a costume by a certain date to attend a convention. Even if self-imposed, deadlines can be intense! “My favorite convention to take part in is ‘Pyrkon,’ in Poland.” For most cosplayers (newcomers and veterans alike), getting to show off your costume at a convention is the moment you’ve been working towards.

Despite having a massive Fallout cosplay collection, Cyperian surprisingly said he’d pick something a little more “space” themed for his dream cosplay. “If I had the chance, I’d like to make a Morgan Yu costume from PREY. It’s one of my favorite games ever made.” So maybe we can expect to see an amazing PREY cosplay from Cyperian in the future? He may need to recruit his equally talented cosplay partner to help. “I frequently work with my girlfriend Ethlaine who is also a cosplayer. She is a fan of the Fallout universe and has quite a few costumes from the series.” We can’t wait to see all the future cosplays you both create, but until then, we will see you in the Wasteland!
