Fallout: Community Spotlight - GamerMOMover50

Sometimes it feels like there are simply not enough hours in the day.

Between work or school, family, friendships and hobbies, the hours melt off the clock. Time management can be a struggle. This is just one of the reasons why we’re so impressed with GamerMOMover50. She manages to juggle raising her teenage twins, a husband, a house full of pets, and somehow still finds time to grow her vibrant YouTube channel.

GamerMOMover50 is no stranger to video games, she recalls playing Pong in the 1970’s. When someone says to the 59-year-old “You’re old” she happily responds that she has a unique perspective. “I was around when video games were born and now, I can see how far they have come.”

Video games are a shared hobby in her household. As her twin daughters were growing up, GamerMOM and her husband would play Minecraft with them together as a family. As a family, their interest in video game genres vary widely. In fact, she was first introduced to the Fallout franchise by her twins. Their household is home to shooters, flight simulators, open-world RPG’s and more. One thing the entire family can agree on is their unwavering support for GamerMOM’s YouTube channel.

Her daughters tout their mother's accomplishments online to friends and coworkers and have been quick to help her navigate the ever-changing online space. “I will always remember the bewildered look on her face when she found out her ol' mom has merch.” GamerMOM tells us of her daughters.

Fallout 4 was GamerMOM’s introduction to the series. “. I fell in love with the location, story, and above all else, the companions. Nick Valentine was my favorite companion, and the most complex in my opinion. He was the “moral compass” for the entire story and extremely well written.” She tells us. After Fallout 4, she dabbled in Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 3.

When it came to Fallout 76 YouTube content, GamerMOM had a hard time finding what she wanted. She found existing videos either too fast, or full of rambling information. “I wanted to present my content in short, easy to watch episodes that gives just the information you need and nothing more.” She continues to explain, “I absolutely love creating content and my family is incredibly supportive, cheering me on from day one.”

“I have been making YouTube videos for three years now, since Fallout 76 was in Beta. I spent the first few months running around the map exploring and started the ‘Secret Places you can C.A.M.P.’ series for players looking for unusual locations they could drop their CAMP down. I made 100 episodes.” She tells us.

We asked GamerMOM to tell us a little bit about her playstyle and character. “I absolutely love exploring alongside my friends.” She says. “My character in Fallout 76 is a retired member of the Order of Mysteries. She has her Mistress of Mystery weapons displayed on her CAMP wall and waits for the chance to take up arms once again.”

With so many years of content creation under her belt, how long does it usually take to create a YouTube video? “Between the noise of having twin teenage daughters, a husband working from home, a Corgi and a cat it is always a challenge to find quiet time to record the voice overs.” She tells us. “Inside the Vault news takes about an hour or so, while more complex videos take a few days, especially if testing is involved.” Then she adds, “I am fussy about the quality of the video because I want to put out the best content I can. For example, I want to record in daylight so viewers can easily see everything, I wear a mining helmet to light up interiors, and I have to eliminate any NPC’s that are in the area I need to record in. I want the recording to be smooth and not panning all over the place, so the time adds up, despite me loving every second that goes into my videos.”

We asked her if she had any videos she was particularly proud of, “In Fallout 76, there is a non-Binary character named Burke. That video got a lot of anger and hate in the comments, but I am very proud of it.” She then goes on to quote herself from the video saying, “We all have a public perception in this world. Sometimes it does not match what we feel inside. And sometimes there is nothing we can do about that. But other times there is. And I don’t need to understand everything Burke is to want to see a smile on their face.” Lastly, she adds, “Love and understanding are all anyone wants in this world, and I am so proud Bethesda added the LGBTQ+ character.”

GamerMOM tells us more about her channel, “I try and help players to the best of my ability. I love meeting new players and am so very happy when another player says, ‘Hey I’m a parent over 50 and playing!’. There are a lot more of us playing than you think, we play 8-10 hours a day or more, laughing and sharing good times together. We wait for the Tuesday Atomic Shop update to see what’s new every week. For many, this is their only social interaction and it’s the highlight of our week. Don’t forget us, please. We are small but mighty.”

When asked if she had any advice for aspiring Fallout 76 YouTuber’s, she had this to say, “Be true to yourself and find your own voice. Even though YouTube is flooded with Fallout 76 content, your subscribers will find you and you will gain a viewership... Everyone has a place in the community.”
